Proper attic ventilation systems allow a continual flow of outside air through the attic, protecting the efficiency of the insulation and helping to lower temperatures in the living space. It consists of a balance between air intake (at your eaves or soffits) and air exhaust (at or near your roof ridge). The FHA recommends a minimum of at least 1 square foot of attic ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic space.
It is estimated that 9 out of 10 homes in North America do not have proper attic ventilation. In the summer, improper ventilation can cause attic heat to build in excess of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This super-heated air eventually penetrates the ceiling insulation into the living area below. In the winter, various household appliances, bathtubs, showers, and cooking vapors can contribute to excess moisture build-up. Improperly ventilated attics allow this moisture to collect and cling to the underside of the roof. The moisture will condense and fall, soaking the attic insulation and reducing its efficiency.
Other types of damage that can result from improper ventilation include:
- High energy costs
- Premature aging of your shingles (as much as 50%)
- Warping, cracking or breaking down of wood framing
- Damage to siding, exterior or interior paint, and wallpaper
- Mildew growth
New Leaf Roofing will analyze your ventilation requirements for both intake and exhaust to ensure you achieve the maximum life from your shingles and the lowest possible energy bills. We offer a wide variety of products in order to present you with a customized solution to meet your specific needs.

Introducing Green Roofing Solutions!
New Leaf Roofing is now offering green roofing solutions to help you keep your home comfortable and cut costs. An underlayment product named Polaralum, manufactured by Heat Barrier Systems Inc, is now available nationwide and is made out of light-weight, non-woven polyester with aluminum foil. Polaralum reflects 97% of the suns radiant heat and saves energy!
How It Works
By placing Polaralum face down under flat roofs and/or pitch roofs, its properties reduce the amount of energy and radiant heat that enters your attic and ceiling cavities. The heat of the suns energy is deflected back through whichever product is installed over the Polaralum system.
During the summer, this product acts as a radiant barrier and thermal barricade on roofs. During the winter months, it helps in deflecting cold temperatures, which helps reduce the amount of heat escaping through the ceiling.
This product has been tested in the United States and all results have been documented and certified by Factory Mutual, a world renowned organization and testing facility.

Remove Hot Stale Attic Air Extend your roof's life. The SunRise is a unique, solar-powered vent fan that pulls the heat right out of your attic. Reduces moisture build-up and prolongs the life of your roof. Even in newer homes that use vapor barriers, moisture can still sneak into the attic and condense on framing boards, roof decking, and insulation. Just one SunRise is powerful enough to protect an entire home. Replace your turbine vents with these solar powered roof ridge and attic exhaust ventilators. Ventilation never was as cost effective and efficient. The SunRise comes fully assembled and can be installed in under an hour. It requires no electrical hook-up. |
